Meet Hart Wilson, the 11-year-old owner of the online Etsy shop, Candles From The Hart.

Wilson started his handmade candle business after being inspired from a trip to Howard University when he was six years old. It was during that moment that the HBCU, located in Washington, D.C., became the dream university that Wilson felt he was destined to attend. But in order to make his aspirations come true, Wilson knew that he would need to raise money to make it possible. Thus, just last year, he executed a plan to launch his candle business and start saving for his future.

“I got on the internet and saw that people were making different things to sell to earn money, and I settled on candles,” Wilson told Because of Them We Can. “My parents and I watched YouTube videos and started experimenting with making candles, and we figured it all out, and that’s when it all started.”

Wilson sells his candles in a variety of vibrant, unique scents such as “Rosemary and Mint,” “Lemon Pound Cake,” “Blueberries and Cream,” “Guava Fresca,” and many more. Before he knew it, his business began to catch an astounding amount of attention.

According to Because of Them We Can, his customers have included the New Orleans Pelicans staff, television writer Inda Craig-Galvan, actress Keena Ferguson from Tyler Perry’s Sistas, and Tracey Bonner from Queen Sugar. Wilson’s business has been booming before his very eyes and it hasn’t stopped. The young owner has received requests to sell his candles in stores, beginning with restaurant owner Gabriel Devarssy in Chicago. Candles From The Hart can now be bought in local stores in Houston and in his hometown of Pearland, Texas.

Although Wilson’s business is gaining significant traction, his main goal is to earn money to fund his college education and make his dreams of attending Howard University a reality. He hopes that his story will serve as an inspiration for other young entrepreneurs and motivate them to follow their dreams.
